Dear friends,
Thanks very much for being concerned. I ended the fast this morning, after 45 days. I didn't have time to update in the morning. Taking only juice today, and hope to gradually update food types over the next 7-8 days. Feeling pretty tired & weak. Will update next week.

Made it to the 38th day
Hi friends,
I indeed made it to this 38th day of the fast, in fairly good condition. I'm gladly looking forward to accomplishing the 40th day, as it's a spiritual milestone in fasting. But since it would not be safe to go on much longer, after the 40th day (this Wednesday), I hope to inform the medical personnel at the shelter. It's not clear whether I'd be immediately hospitalized or not, but either way I'll be prepared for the uncertain and painful next few weeks. Thanks again for all those who have held me in their thoughts and prayers.

Made it to the 31st day
Hi friends,
I have successfully made it to the 31st day of the water fast. Thanks to dressing warmly, and resting a lot, I don't feel much different from the previous weeks. However, as the muscle mass is decreasing, and internal organ damage could result, I hope to inform the medical personnel after the 40th day, if I manage to go that far. Even then, it's not obvious whether they'd hospitalize me or not. Either way, I'm ready to bear all the suffering that comes along with this last stand of mine.

All is well on 24th day
Hi friends,
On this 24th day, I'm feeling fine; nothing exceptional to report. I had another head cold from which I recovered successfully. Came this morning to the Friends meeting despite cold weather (this morning has been the coldest so far this winter). The biggest question now is how much longer I'd be able to continue without a problem. I hope to update again next Sunday. Take care till then.

Feeling fine on the 17th day
Hi All,
Thanks to all those who sent messages of support, comfort & hope. I'm feeling very well on the 17th day. On my first two fasts, I indeed went up to the 23rd or 24th day, so this fast would enter new territory only after the next Sunday. Judging by how the things have been going so far, I expect the things to be smooth during this week. Thanks again.

Feeling normal on the 10th day
Hi Friends,
As my fast is about to enter the 10th day, I'm feeling normal for this stage of the fast (from previous 6 years of experience). Earlier in the week, I also successfully recovered from a head cold. Vital signs were also normal as I was checked by a doctor last Friday, during an unrelated regular checkup. I'm feeling well & in good spirits. The energy levels are, of course, lower than normal, and I take that into account in every physical activity including walking. Writing this from the Quaker meetinghouse. A mid-week opportunity for communication didn't materialize last week. Thanks again for your support.
ps: This month's Newsletter of my Quaker Meeting has an interview with me. It's on the page 9 of the "Current Month's Newsletter" on the Newsletters link at fifteenth.quaker.org After the end of January, it'll be found under the "Previous Month's Newsletter"
Note added April 2008: The interview page may now be viewed (as a PDF file) at:

Annual 3-week fast started
Dear friends,
So I started the 7th annual 3-week water fast on the evening of Dec 27th. Things have been fine so far as of the third day. As I did today, I hope to come to 15th Street Quaker Meeting every Sunday (by bus & subway). Then I should be able to update this. I also hope to try to get online on Wednesdays. Thanks again.
Happy New Year!
